I’ve enjoyed your writing for a while now and then you mention John Prine! Perfect! If you haven’t already, check his son Tommy’s first album. Now that you’re a Texas girl hopefully you listen to Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley’s, and Nanci Griffith. Keep up the nice work.
I want to go on a road trip with you some day too! I can drive. And back roads with John Prine and Bob Dylan all the way. And why haven't we ever talked about how we both lived in California thinking we'd live there forever and then left because we were lonely? (My second book Kiss the Sunset Pig is about that.) Anyway, enjoy your November road trip!
“In California, I’d been lonely. That’s the trouble with moving all the time. Back then, I thought, Do I want to feel lonely or do I want to feel trapped? Or: Which is more important, freedom or community? The answer was lonely. The answer was freedom. I believed in those binaries. It would take me years to question my fundamentalist church of fresh starts.”
I relate! And I do LOVE a long meandering road trip.
I’m team public transport when it’s good--I adore a train ride. I do live and travel in a van though. So I suppose, at least in Ruby the van’s earshot, I should say team car.
Oh, I love a good train ride, too! I lived for a decade in NY, during which time my license lapsed. I totally believe in public transportation, but sadly, its reach is limited. There really isn't any here. I was reluctant to get my license again, but the freedom is priceless, isn't it?
For sure. I had a period of a couple car-free years in an incredibly bikeable city, and that was a joy. Bikeable cities and stellar public transport is the dream for me!! 🚎🚲
Wait I think you’re a wonderful driver! I was so impressed by your confident driving skills when we first met that I felt I had to befriend you!
We are hazards.

Off to listen to Tommy! Thanks, Bill!

I don't think this road trip should happen "someday." Let's do it!
OK, where to?

Thank you for sharing from Texas!
