Love this one, Diana. "Too often, I count on no one but myself." Same. Even as a child, I did this. Still do. Also, thanks for getting me to think more about the decor and art of AirBnBs—I agree, all have been different, and I've often chosen one based on the concept of the decor. The triptych paintings/photographs are surely in the top five of repeats, though. Hope you're well! JT
Trust--We rent out our own home in two different cities whenever we're not in one or the other. And not because we're rich, just the opposite. It would present a problem if someone really took advantage of us. That really requires trust, both in the website for some kind of ability to screen and our own sense of who these people are--moreso than if it was just a rental that we didn't live in and didn't have a more personal investment in (for instance, what's hanging on our walls is not what you described!) But men? It took me a long time to figure out who and how to trust beyond the level of a five year old's "He smelled nice, and he offered me ice cream." And yes, trust in dogs!
My old boss starts his emails with "I trust this finds you well..." which I find quaint. I like that he seems to rely on my ability to remain well! The other aspect of trust for me is that if someone I trust trusts something, I am persuaded to trust it too by proxy. I was in your workshop with the scammer who told us she was dying and my instinct was to be skeptical. It just sounded too melodramatic to be true. But you trusted her and I trusted you so I quieted my inner cynic, which sometimes prevents me from being open. I don't regret it!
I remember you telling me that you'd been skeptical! You were so right. But I still think I'll believe anyone who claims to have a disease. Statistically, it makes sense to believe it, I think.
Gawd I just stayed in the worst airbnb art place in CA - it did create some really funny conversations. Faux gold plated cheesy everything ... weird stuff in weird corners. They definitely didn't trust us, and visa versa honestly in the end. Fun read
I love you and I miss you. Who is that dog? That dog is so cute!
Love you! That's my niece Molly (Ian's dog) when she was a puppy.
An airbnb in Mexico I stayed in had some metal "art" piece with the store price tag still hanging from it
Wait, that's amazing. I'm laughing.

Jill!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
>What are your criteria for trust?
Eh. I wish. 2x as many experiences as what has me distrusting, might get me back to trust mode. {sigh}
Sigh indeed. I hear you.

Love this (and can’t wait to catch up in person next week)!
Count on no one but yourself. How toxically American. How cynical. How isolating. I wish I were above it.
^^^^^ SO GOOD. so true. this piece was such a great conglomerate of different ways to think about and feel trust

Nothing says "I don't trust you" quite like gold plating.
You are so great to notice things I’d never notice and turning it into
a life lesson!
Love this piece.
I remember our beautiful “celebration “
Airbnb in Tulum.
The best Airbnb.
